Ten Movies ’90s Kids Love… But Do They Hold Up?
NO… and YES
Hear me out – this movie is stupid.
I mean, it is embarrassingly, brain-rottingly, ruin-the-career-of-every-person-involved stupid. For one, our heroes are stiff as a board and the filmmakers’ apparent solution to that is accompanying a sound effect to every over-dramatic move they make, even when they are not fighting purple ooze monsters. Speaking of ooze, I dare you to find me a villain as nonthreatening, confusing and nonsensical as Freeman’s Ivan.
Despite all there is to poke a stick at, the Power Rangers were a meaningful part of my childhood and revisiting this film after who-knows-how-long was a genuinely invigorating experience. I even checked Twitter afterward to see what old fans were saying and the feeling was mutual. The cherished pre-adolescent memories of watching the Rangers in action are those that survive past the age of maturity and that is something that Lionsgate’s reboot, even if it might be good, will never have.
