23 Years ago this month, one of the best horror films to come out in the last quarter century was released, and no one gave a shit. Upon it’s release in 1997, ‘Event Horizon’ was panned by critics and shunned by audiences. The reason, you may ask? Marketing, plain and simple. ‘Event Horizon’ was marketed […]
This week we travel back to 1988 and the wild, wild west. No, not the Will Smith turd from years back, but a little western film called ‘Young Guns.’ This film features a strong cast and a pretty good screenplay to boot. Emilio Estevez stars as Billy the Kid, along with Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond […]
This week we travel back to 1991 to look at ‘Point Break.’ Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who also helmed such films at ‘The Hurt Locker,’ ‘Blue Steel,’ and ‘Strange Days,’ this film is an all out adrenaline rush. Now, I will be the first to say that I have probably watched this film atleast 100 […]
This week’s Retro Review takes us back to 1990. Back before Alec Baldwin made people laugh playing Donald Trump, he actually starred in some pretty damn good movies. ‘Miami Blues’ is one of those films, which is highly underrated. Directed by George Armitage and co-starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Fred Ward, the film revolves around […]
This week we travel back in time to 1990 for the film ‘Pump Up the Volume.’ I always think how complex life seemed as a teenager, yet looking back on it now, life was pretty damn good and easy. ‘Pump Up the Volume’ was one of those teen flicks that was basically telling teens to […]
So, 1993 brought just an onslaught of great films. Films like Jurassic Park, Dazed and Confused and Tombstone all cracked The Good Doctor’s Top 25 List of All-Time Favorite Flicks, however, there was one that stood out over all of them. That film was True Romance. The ultra-violent, love story of Clarence and Alabama Worley. […]
One of the most underrated television shows in recent memory will finally get an audience that it deserves. The MMA driven drama series Kingdom will begin airing on Netflix on July 1. All three seasons will be available to stream. Kingdom first aired on the now-defunct Audience Network by AT&T. I happened to overhear Joe […]
AJ Schnack may reside in Los Angeles these days, but the Edwardsville, Il. native and University of Missouri graduate showed off his Midwestern roots in Long Gone Summer, the new ESPN 30-For-30 film about the 1998 home run chase between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. The film was the culmination of a three-year process for […]
For this retro review, we are going back to 1993. Back to a time when Sylvester Stallone’s muscles were as big as his box-office clout. Back when action movies were action movies. Cliffhanger is without a doubt one of Stallone’s finest action films. It’s also director Renny Harlin’s best work. There’s not much bad to […]
Judd Apatow is a filmmaker who is not afraid to take chances. While he can bring the laughs with films like 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, he’s not afraid to get sentimental and tackle emotionally charged topics. Funny People was a prime example of that as Adam Sandler deals with learning he has cancer. […]
