Movie #3: This Happened?Slither

Year – 1973

Man, the nerd credentials are off the charts here. Slither was written by W.D. Richter, the man who wrote Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Big Trouble in Little China and also directed The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. As for the director (Howard Zieff) he went on to direct movies like The Main Event, Private Benjamin and My Girl. Sorry, nerds, I can’t help you there.

The film stars James Caan, in his first post-Godfather role, as a smalltime car thief fresh off of a two-year prison stint. Through a series of circumstances too convoluted he finds himself on a cross-country trip pulling an Airstream trailer and locked in a battle with an evil Dodge Discoverer 25R. How do we know it’s evil? Because it painted all black, of course. The film’s chase-scenes end up playing like a poor-man’s Duel nevertheless they’re fun to watch given the novelty of the vehicles involved.

As for the rest of the film, it’s an offbeat, meandering comedy that, were it not for its 1973 sell-by-date, you might mistake for an early Coen Brothers film. It’s populated with peculiar characters saying odd things. – TOK
