Warner Bros. Announces Tom Hardy Playing Bane; Anne Hathaway is Catwoman

It feels like speculation on who the next Batman villain would be started right after people left the theater showing The Dark Knight. Director Christopher Nolan had stated on previous occasions that the original plan had been to bring back Heath Ledger to reprise his Joker role, but due to the unfortunate death of the young actor, the team behind the successful Batman franchise would have to go back to the drawing board.

For the longest period of time it was rumored that the Riddler would be the main villain in the third Batman film, but no solid reports substantiated those claims. It wasn’t until Tom Hardy (who worked with Nolan on Inception) was cast a the villain that speculation started going down different paths. (Check out our own speculation on the matter.)

Well, now the cat is out of the bag. Warner Bros. released a statement that confirmed that Tom Hardy will be playing Bane in the upcoming film, The Dark Knight Rises, and Anne Hathway will be playing the part of Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

The Catwoman role has been rumored for a long time, and it only makes sense after the death of the main love interest in The Dark Knight. Bane makes a little less sense to me, because he doesn’t seem like a character that is easily adapted to the screen. However, I trust Nolan’s judgment, and I’m still thinking he has a great shot at making an all around great trilogy.

So, what do you think of this news? Let us know in the comments!

My first thoughts revert right back to Clooney’s Batman and the ridiculous Bane character that was Poison Ivy’s (Uma Thurman) puppy: pointless, senseless, overall useless. But my next thoughts quickly turned to “How will Nolan make this right?” It seems as though he has taken the opportunity, at every turn, every nook & cranny of the Batman story to give it that dark tinge of depth and purpose. These are done in such subtle, subconscious ways that I bet they go unnoticed by the casual viewer. Nonetheless, once I started thinking of ways Bane could be awesome (No Joker, of course, but still potentially quality), and I can’t wait to see the movie.

The closest any previous Batman film came to fully encapsulating a quality villain was Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. I don’t care if people are gonna throw a fit over Nicholson’s Joker; (1) he was a Joke compared Devito’s Penguin, and (2) he was too comical and Catwoman was hot! Anyway, speaking of – Hathaway in that role?! With Nolan through the looking glass?! Anyone see Hathaway’s dance-scene in Bride Wars? (I did, sorry to say, but you’re missing out if you didn’t see this scene). Catwoman is going to haunt nightmares, much like the Joker did…and dreams.
