Movie #6 – Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

Year – 1974

The 14^th film in the original Godzilla series, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, commemorated the 20^th anniversary of the franchise.  They celebrated by increasing the budget slightly.  Key word: slightly.

By this point in the series, Godzilla had gone from villain to protector.  (Apparently, he just wanted a hug.)  When apelike aliens build a robotic Godzilla, the real Godzilla is called into service.

The film was originally released in the United States in 1977 under the title Godzilla vs. Bionic Monster.  However, Universal Studios, owner of The Six Million Dollar Man, and its spin-off The Bionic Woman, took umbrage.  And by “umbrage” I mean “threatened to sue the shit out of them”.  The film was quickly retitled Godzilla vs. Cosmic Monster.
