On a volleyball road trip to Chicago I turned to look out the window while we were at a stop light. There was a cemetary right there and the grave stone in the very front was Gaylord Sweetwood. I immediately called attention to all of the guys in the van. Worst name ever

One time I accidentally mailed a sex tape to my ex-girlfriend while we were in college. So a few buddies and I traveled across the country to retrieve it before she could watch it. Needless to say hijinks ensued, friendships were formed, and Tom Green fed my snake while I was gone.

Close call…While in London I went to Harrod’s Dept Store and a policeman stopped me from entering saying they had received a bomb threat. I left and later that day on the TV news, they showed video of the bomb squad removing a bomb they claimed was large enough to level the entire block…

My wife and I were flying to Italy for a conference, and when we got the airport in Milan we learned that the airline had lost our luggage. There was a big group of other passengers that lost theirs, too, and we all had to line up and fill out a claim. We were stuck in line behind a very irate and very smelly Italian guy, who spent the whole time yelling loudly at no one in particular. I have no idea what he was saying, but whatever it was I’m sure he spoke for all of us.

Growing up, I played a lot of youth hockey which required travel and hotel stays. We would stay about 3 to a room most trips. On one of these trips, in the dead of night, I got up to go to the bathroom. I did my business and got up to flush the toilet, but as soon as I did, a huge alarm started blaring. In my half-asleep state, I thought I had flushed incorrectly and jiggled the handle hoping that would stop the noise. It took me at least 10 seconds to realize it was the fire alarm going off. The entire hotel was outside in the middle of the night, and my roommates wasted no time in telling the whole team that I had set off the fire alarm with my crap.

I missed my stop while traveling in the local train in Frankfurt Germany, only to be let out at the end of the rail line, it took me 6 hours to get back which was only a 10 minute trip from the airport.

My family and I went on a Walt Disney Florida trip in 2006. I will never forget it! We were walking through Epcot and noticed that the seagulls and other birds were literally attacking people for their ice cream cones, as if they were starving to death. Next thing I know, my Mom is yelling to get the bird off of her and it steals her ice cream away from her and decides to poop right on her head. HAHAHAH! It was a riot!

I have had some unique experiences when going to other destinations. Some strange. Some funny. Some you just don’t want to remember after they are over. So, I will just talk about my favorite.
I went to France in high school. It was a magnificent place. All kinds of things to do. I will never forget their beds in the hotel. They were so small, my legs were dangling half way off! I loved the scenery and buildings. They were all so beautiful. I got to drink and have fun with my friends. I will never forget their pizza either. Their slices of pizza were as big as two of my heads put together! And they were like $1 a piece! Come on….here they would be at least $5. I wish everyone would get to experience something like that. It was absolutely amazing and I wish I could take my gf someday.

I used to have a travel job and flew all over the world and had lots of strange things happen, but my favorite story was not even mine. My boss was in Beijing and was asked if he liked duck. He was thinking about peking duck and said that he did.

At dinner that night, his first course was fried duck feet, standing upright on a bed of lettuce. Each course from that point served a little more of the duck until he finished with the bill (the duck’s not his request for payment). So he warned me–be careful when you are asked that question.

I didn’t have that problem in China, but in Japan I was asked if I liked chicken. I gave a nervous ‘yes?’ We ended up eating a lot of chicken breast pieces prepared in different ways–after the first round turned out to be chicken livers. Win some . . .

While out to dinner with my bandmates in Italy at a posh
restaurant I needed to visit the ladies room. While I was there and
had left my handbag behind they decided to pull a joke on me.
They emptied the handbag and filled
it with silverware (they let the maitre’d in on the joke). When we got up to leave I heaved the bag
over my shoulder and the silverware hit the floor. The maitre’d threatened to arrest me.
Never did get even with those wiseguys.

Over the thanksgiving Holiday in 82, Left Ft. Campbell for Detroit. Went to the Holiday game and went to Canada for the nightlife and gambling. From there went to Dayton for a few days. Got the thriller lp and saw Earth, Wind and Fire. Left Dayton and arrived in St. Louis in time for the Prince “1999” concert with Vanity6 and the Time at the Checkerdome. Went to see “48 Hrs.” the next day and had a going away party. Two days later, I was stationed in Korea. One Hell of a trip.

Once while traveling by air from Pittsburgh, there was a terrible storm. It was so intense, the plane rocked and lightening flashed, but the wierdest thing was that the flight attendant came over and told us how frightened she was and sat down next to us. Must have been her first flight in a storm.

I was being flown in for an interview for a new job. I usually book my own flights, but the company did it for me this time. I was flying from Nevada to California. I usually fly direct. Instead the company had me stopping in another city before my final destination. I fell a sleep on the plane. When I awoke people were disembarking. So I grabbed my bag and I got off the plane. Little did I know that I was in the wrong city. My plane continued without me. I had to catch the next flight to my city. I arrived at the interview late and I blamed it on traffic. They must have believed me because they made me an offer.

  • Holly , December 8, 2009

My boyfriend and I went to Chicago in March and it was so cold. It was Saint Patricks day and the whole lake was green. We walked to Navy Peer and all over the place and it was freezing outside. We saw many sites and we had a great time. We love Chicago and we visit there again soon but maybe in the summer time when it’s warm. My son loves Chicago he loves the museums and the Aquarium.

  • Karen , December 8, 2009

I once flew to Canada and the pilot had to fly in narrow between mountains. It was amazing!

  • Amy , December 8, 2009

I flew to California for my uncle’s wedding when I was about 13 yrs old, and we drove to San Francisco and Carmel. It was neat to see the sites, like the Golden Gate Bridge, a seashore with seagulls(had my picture taken w/one I named Pete), & see the city of Carmel, where Clint Eastwood was mayor. Also, my apt building, last place of work(Bank of America bldg patio) & 2 businesses across the street from B.O.A. are in this movie!! They filmed in an apt similar to mine on the floor below mine!! I’d see Clooney’s white limousine from time to time, too, but never got to see him:( Oh well, maybe another time.

Traveled to Las Vegas for a business meeting and was surprised at how cold it got in November. I thought it was always warm and pleasant in Las Vegas. The casinos were warm though.

During a vacation in Hawaii 2 other friends and myself were island hopping. These small aircraft have floating devices under the seat. When I pointed it out to one of the girls she got hysterical and began to cry.

  • Loretta , December 9, 2009

The most irritating flight I had was traveling with my son, trying to get his car seat into the airline seat with the flight attendant yelling at me to hurry up instead of lending a hand to help me.

  • dee , December 9, 2009

All trips are memorable, but some you just will never forget. I was in a bathroom in Vegas, and a change girl came in and told me her legs were tarred…I was so embarrassed. She had to repeat it like four times because I realized her country accent was saying Tired not tarred…couldn’t wait to get out of that bathroom. hahh

I used to be an over the road truck driver so I have really seen some sights on the road. One really funny one is we were picking up a load in Texas, near the Mexican border. After we unloaded and drove off…we heard really loud noises…a Mexican employee had locked himself in the back of the truck…hahahah.

When I was 16, a friend and I hitchhicked to California. I had the time of my life…it didn’t last but a few days..we got caught and our parents had to send plane money to get us back home. When I got home I found out my Mom had repainted my entire room..I think she liked me gone. : )

In 1981 we packed up our 4 kids (10 to 14 years old) and took our first vacation in 6 years. We circled the west for 7 weeks in a red van camping in and out of it. The highlight of it was our trip across the desert from LA to Las Vegas durig the afternoon in that van without air conditioning. Of course the kids grumbled the way, but to this day they all talk about it. SIX PEOPLE, I VAN, PRICELESS.

After weeks away from home I was booked to fly home from Fresno, Ca to St. Louis but just before boarding time they canceled my flight. Luckily, an understanding ticket agent got me on a late flight where the plane was being shuttled to the east coast via Denver and St. Louis. I was one of only four passengers and we flew first class and got the royal treatment- lots of free food and drink and flight attendant stories. What started out bad turned great.

My family and I rented a white van and loaded it up with Christmas presents to visit my brother-in-law and his family in Virginia. We left St. Louis and got into Ohio when a blizzard hit. It turned out to be the worst snow storm in Ohio history. We were in white-out conditions, zero visibility, and stuck on the side of the road in the white van. It was my mother-in-law, my 5 year old son, my husband, and myself. We ended up spending the night there watching the occasional brave semi push by us and hoping they did not hit our van since they couldn’t see us. My husband had to clean the tailpipe out every once in a while and the snow was up to his chest (he is 6’1″). Bathroom breaks were a tactical nightmare but we were lucky to have food, water, and blankets. Next morning, a plow came through and we talked him into helping us get out of the snowbank. We were able to follow behind the plow and slowly get out of Ohio but the other side of the highway still had people stranded, some with small children, for 2 days after we left. I always make sure that I have emergency supplies now as that was the worst, and scariest travel experience I’ve ever had.

On my honeymoon we kept running into issues. Our flight was delayed so we missed our connecting flight. The airline told us that we couldn’t get on a flight that would get us to our destination so we could board our cruise on time. Luckily, my wife showed some anger and the airline just happened to find two open seats that got us to our destination just in time.

While at the airport in Germany I kept getting searched. At the first checkpoint I got frisked and my suitcase was gone through. Then there was a 2nd checkpoint and I got frisked again. I felt like I had a stamp on my forehead telling them to search me.

  • Reba , December 9, 2009

We had to sit in the airplane for two hours before the plane left. There were some kind of mechanical issues. It is not fun sitting inside of a warm airplane with nothing to do.

  • Steve , December 9, 2009

I’ve traveled a lot for business over the years and always hope for the best — but plan for the worst. My worst experience came in August 2003 when I was returning home from Europe and went through Kennedy airport in New York. During the transfer, the entire northeastern USA was blacked out and I found myself stranded in NYC for 25 hours with no luggage, no cell phone, no power, no hotel, no car, and about $40 cash. ATMs were not working, vendors were not taking credit cards, and cell phone networks were down. It was a nightmare, but and adventure at the same time. I kept my cool and met some interesting people during that ordeal. After a very long night, I finally got home the next day, my luggage followed about 4 days later.

  • Delores , December 9, 2009

I guess the worst scenario was on my first plane trip it was delayed for a few hours and I got more scared with every min. It wasn’t too bad once I finally got to board though. This looks like a pretty good movie. Hope they shoot lots more in our city.

  • John , December 9, 2009

I always book an aisle seat on an airplane because I need the shoulder room. Many years ago on one sold-out flight, the airline had changed airplane types for whatever reason which changed the seating configuration and my aisle seat became the middle seat of a three seat configuration. That was only the start of my bad luck because when I got to my seat I couldn’t even see it because two obese individuals consumed the entire row. It was literally a three ring circus that required the stewardess to try to get the individuals to make room for me. I was finally able to squeeze my butt in, but I couldn’t get to my seat belt and I had to stay hunched forward the entire flight. I was one miserable person the entire flight. The airlines couldn’t get away with that now….I hope.

  • Janet , December 9, 2009

My first airplane flight was on my honeymoon and I was happy and nervous at the same time. Everything was fine until we hit some turbulence and all the china fell out of an upper cabinet in the galley and scared the stuffings out of me and all on board. Later the captain said we had to make an unsceduled landing because of an equipment warning light. My nerves were frazzled until we found out it was the beacon light on top of the plane that had to be replaced. We finally made it to our destination and had a wonderful honeymoon. We are now married 48 years.

I went to London when I was 20 on a study abroad trip and definitely took advantage of the lower drinking age. During our last night in London a group of us got a little crazy. While everyone else decided to call it a night I continued to have a few more drinks with another friend. Finally I decided to turn in for the night and return to my room. Unfortunately for me our hotel was very hard to navigate especially when you’ve had quite a bit to drink. There were two staircases and they each led to a different part of the building and they did not connect. I ended up taking the wrong staircase and decided I was too tired to try and find my room. I then fell asleep in the hallway until my friends found me a few hours later when it was time to leave to catch our train. At the time I felt horrible for causing my friends to worry but now we can all look back on it and laugh.

I was on the last flight of a pilot who was retiring. Firetrucks lined the tarmac and sprayed arches of water over the plane as a salute to our pilot while we taxied to the runway. The pilot received loud applause from the passengers when we landed.

My husband and I were in AZ for a wedding. The day we were to return home we had about 2 hours to kill before going to the airport. While driving around we were hit in the rear at a stop sign. That took care of our extra time.

When my son was 2 or 3, I got him his own rolling suitcase. It was bright and colorful. He rolled it behind him the entire time in the airport. He was so cute and looked like such a seasoned traveler!

After my honeymoon, we made an unexpected overnight stop in Paris, Paris, MO that is!!!!
When returning to Spring,Texas we were towing my husbands car behind us and taking his black labrador with us. We had stopped to give the dog a potty break and decided to take a nap. While we were sleeping, the dog (named Boner) decided to chew thru the tow light wires. We had to stay overnight ntil we could get them fixed.
