Top 10 Favorite Horror Movies of All Time, in Honor of ‘The Conjuring’

8. The Fly (1986)

In my estimation, this is David Cronenberg’s best film. Jeff Goldblum plays the lead in this gory remake of the 1958 film. When the film was released in 1986, it was considered to be pushing the envelope of what was accepted in terms of the gore in the film. The strong character development in the film, makes this film seem more like a tragic tale, rather than a horror film at times.

7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Loosely based on the life of Ed Gein, and I use the term ‘loosely’ very strongly, TCM is one of the creepiest films I have ever seen. While this film may not have a lot of scares that will make you jump out of your chair, director Tobe Hooper uses documentary-style camera work to make the film that much more creepy. The bones used in the film are real, which makes it even more eerie. TCM has been remade a couple times now, and neither remake lives up to the original in terms of scariness. Hooper did not use a particularly large amount of ‘blood and guts’ in the original, which made it seem even more realistic.
