Throwback Thursdays Volume 4-Nevermind-Nirvana

Nirvana’s “Nevermind” was released on September 24, 1991.  The first single released from the album was “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”  In the age of hair metal and pure 80’s pop, this single was something completely different.  With influences ranging from punk to pop rock, self taught guitarist/vocalist Kurt Cobain and Bassist Krist Novoselic along with a slew of different drummers, changed mainstream music.  “Smells like Teen Spirit” would have been enough to catapult the album through the charts, but this album is full of insanely catchy tunes such as “In Bloom,” “Lithium,” “Come as You Are,” “Polly,” “Drain You,” “On a Plain,” making it one of the best albums of the 90’s and arguably one of the best albums of all time.  By March 1992 “Nevermind” was number 1 on the Billboard 200.  I remember when I first saw the video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” I couldn’t take my eyes off of the screen, not because it was exceptional, but because the song was so different from anything at that time.  Nirvana knocked Michael Jackson off the number 1 spot in March 1992 before the second single “Come as You Are” was released.  Since its release, this album as sold over 26 million.  If you are too young to know this album or if you haven’t listened to it in a while, I suggest that you go download it now.  Don’t take my word for it, you made it number 1 in 1992.
