Theatre Review: HAMILTON Returns to The Fabulous Fox
Hamilton returns to the Fabulous Fox Theatre with a burst of energy – showcasing dynamic, fast-paced, and witty musical numbers. Though it may seem unconventional to combine hip-hop, rap, and Broadway musical theater in a story centered on its titular founding father, Hamilton—with its themes of love, loss, and duty—has quickly become a beloved fixture in the world of theater.
The current tour is bursting with talent, with each cast member contributing to the rich musical tapestry. As the protagonist, Tyler Fauntleroy is captivating as Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant to the colonies striving to find his place amid the American Revolution and the subsequent creation of the United States. Fauntleroy brings impressive and powerful talent to the role, bringing Hamilton to life as he navigates friendships, love, and a deep sense of responsibility to his work. Reluctantly, Hamilton finds his place in the Revolution as the secretary to George Washington, portrayed by A.D. Weaver, whose soulful, commanding voice perfectly embodies the general and first president especially during “One Last Time”. Surrounded by a superb cast of characters, Hamilton moves through life never satisfied and always wanting more—a theme brilliantly sung by Marja Harmon in her role as Angelica, Hamilton’s sister-in-law.
Aaron Burr, a frequent verbal sparring partner and foil to Hamilton, is a man captivated by his legacy but perpetually overshadowed by those around him. Portrayed by Jimmie “JJ” Jeter, Burr serves as a pseudo-narrator—resigned to his role in history, yet constantly yearning for more recognition and power. Jeter brings a magnetic energy to the character, especially in standout numbers like “The Room Where It Happens” and “Wait for It.”
Offering further perspective on Hamilton’s life is his relationship with the Schuyler Sisters—Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy. Lauren Mariasoosay heartbreakingly shines as Eliza Hamilton, bringing a gentle empathy to the role that contrasts beautifully with the intense aura of Hamilton and his ambition. Adding a lighter touch to the musical is Justin Matthew Sargent as King George III, who brings a hysterical and delightful air to his scenes, and was clearly a crowd favorite. Jared Howelton, Kai Thomani Tshikosi, and Nathan Haydel, in dual roles, portray six men who significantly influenced Hamilton’s life, seamlessly carrying friendship and adversaries across both acts. Howelton, particularly as Thomas Jefferson, and Tshikosi as Hercules Mulligan, stand out in their performances.
The use of lighting, costumes, and a muted set design allows the actors and music to truly take center stage. These elements work to enhance the performances without overshadowing the story.
Hamilton‘s novelty lies not only in its catchy, toe-tapping music but also in its unflinching exploration of themes that remain relevant today. Immigration, the American Dream, death, ambition, sacrifice, love, heritage, and race are as timeless as the founding fathers’ stories themselves. While the musical is often lighthearted and fun, it doesn’t pretend that those who shaped our nation were perfect or without flaws. With its rapid-fire lyrics and driving music, each musical number effectively captures and conveys these enduring themes, making Hamilton both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Hamilton is a groundbreaking blend of history and contemporary culture, making the story of America’s founding fathers both accessible and engaging for modern audiences. Enjoy this lively and captivating production at the Fabulous Fox through September 8th.
