Since its publishing in 1957, the children’s book How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss has been a staple in celebrating the holiday season. Further cemented into the collective whimsy of the season by the 1966 animated TV film narrated by Boris Karloff, the iconic story has been told in many ways, including the national tour currently at St. Louis’ own Fabulous Fox Theater.

In the story, Old Dog Max (warmly played by W. Scott Stewart) narrates the year he helped the Grinch steal Christmas from the citizens in Whoville. A fun cast of characters follows but are mostly in the (sometimes multiple) shadows of Joshua Woodie in the titular role of the Grinch. Woodie is funny and charismatic. His hysterical antics on stage as he moves from a grouchy thief to growing a heart three sizes lead to the success of the musical. Young Max, played by an energetic Xavier McKnight, follows along in the Grinch’s schemes. During the Grinch’s stealing escapade, he meets tiny Cindy-Lou Who, adorably played by Vivian Atencio.

The music itself is serviceable, but ultimately forgettable. The title song is the singular standout, although “Welcome, Christmas” is a song fans of the story will know and sing. The sentimental songs meant to teach lessons are forgettable amidst the musical’s staging. The scenery is bright and designed to behoove the spectacle of a Dr. Seuss book. The costumes are fun and colorful but coupled with the vibrant set design and intense lighting, drown out the talented cast.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is funny, whimsical and, thankfully, quick. At only 85 minutes long and without an intermission, the audience can absorb the zaniness without it becoming repetitive or boring. The show knows its audience loves the Grinch and involves them in fun ways.  Children of all ages, and those wanting to grow their heart by three sizes, will have a great time watching the musical this holiday season.
