Louis Leterrier Bringing “Y: The Last Man” To TV Instead of the Big Screen?

Anyone who knows me, knows I’ve been following the production of Y: The Last Man intently for years. I’m a huge fan of the graphic novel, and I think it could easily become a quality film. Although, I’ve not been impressed with the people attached to the production. D.J. Caruso was the first director attached, and Shia Lebeouf was rumored to his star.  However, last year that fell through (although Caruso is still attached to the project as a producer) and Clash of the Titans‘ director Louis Leterrier stepped into the production.

In a recent interview with MTV, Leterrier let slip that the production has stalled once again, and is having trouble finding financing. The trouble comes from how the studios want to approach the series. Should it be one film? A trilogy? Or as Leterrier suggests, a television series?

“It’s kind of stuck somewhere now,” said Leterrier to MTV. “I still want to do it. I’m passionate about it. But it’s stuck. People don’t know what to do with it. I’d love to do it, but I need people to finance it, and the people financing it don’t know if it’s a TV show a movie, or what it should be.”

“I like the idea of a TV show. You take time to get to know your characters. You can introduce a lot of characters. You don’t need your three-action set pieces that you usually need for movies. Frankly, with HBO and Showtime and cable shows, the DVD box sets and all, you can have a product that doesn’t make you feel like as soon as it’s projected, it’s thrown away. It’s really a piece of art.”

I have to admit, I quite like the idea of Y: The Last Man as a television series.  The series had a run of 60 issues, and throughout those issues the story covers a lot of ground. Making it into one film would reduce the quality of the stories and characters, but it might be possible over a trilogy. However, it would translate perfectly into a multi-season story centering around Yorrick, 355, and Dr. Mann (and can’t forget Ampersand!).

If anything a strong series debut from The Walking Dead on AMC proves that graphic novels can be made not only as fantastic films, but as fantastic TV series. Is Y: The Last Man next?
