Sure, it isn’t as sharp as the original, but it is certainly worthy of the Scream name. Scream 4 is more of a reboot in many ways. Director Wes Craven said in an interview that while making Scream 4, he made an outline of how this story would continue for another two films. I certainly hope those films get made because in an age of horror films that relies on “boo” scares and torture porn, a film that at least attempts to engage the viewers intellect should have some face time.
Major studio horror films have recently become less interested in providing scares and more interested in creating a certain atmosphere or brand. Scream 4 captures that brand. The Scream films are a “franchise” in every sense of the word. If you go in to this film expecting anything more than that, you’ll probably be disappointed. Otherwise, it’s a lot of fun.
