Well, everyone knew it was coming, but as of Tuesday Avatar added another $2.7 million to its total to bring it to a whopping $601.1 million dollars domestically. This makes Avatar the highest grossing film domestically, internationally, and worldwide. It has done an amazing $1,447 million dollars internationally, to bring itself to a worldwide total of $ $2,048 million dollars.
So, just how high can it go? It appears it can go quite a bit higher. Its grosses on weekdays at this point still range in the high to mid $2 million dollar range, and its weekend dropoffs continue to be very little. Most likely it has to do with the hype surrounding the picture, inflated 3D prices, and lack of films that can compete. It has a very good chance of reaching the $700 million dollar mark domestically before it closes, and who knows how high the foreign totals will get before the film eventually closes. It still has a very long way to go before it matches Titanic in ticket sales, but for a film that many thought were doomed after the trailers appeared, it did pretty well.
A 2D DVD version of Avatar is set to come out later this year, and apparently 20th Century Fox is already in talks with Cameron about a sequel, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. When a sequel does come, it will come on Cameron’s time schedule, and no one elses.
