By the third installment, the Back to the Future team was all sci-fi’d out, I suppose. After a darker direction in Part II, the filmmakers decided to lighten the tone for Part III. Marty was sent back to Hill Valley circa 1885 in an attempt to extricate a not-too-eager-to-leave Doc. Until, that is, he discovers that Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen is out to kill him.
Though the film is the lesser of the trilogy, it’s not without its charms. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd still have great chemistry. While the film downshifts in “children’s film” territory, the franchise had amassed so much goodwill, that most people didn’t care.
