6 Comedy Western Movies, In Honor of ‘The Lone Ranger’ Starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer

Movie #5 – Three Amigos!

Year – 1986

Three Amigos was comedic retelling of The Magnificent Seven or, if you’re a film nerd Akira Kurosawa‘s Seven Samurai. A modest hit upon its’ initial release; it went on to develop a cult following all its’ own. In fact, this movie is the reason that if you Google the word “plethora,” they auto-suggest “of piñatas”.

The film had a circuitous path to the silver screen. The film ended up starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short but was originally intended to partner Steve Martin up with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. After Belushi’s untimely death, Steven Spielberg planned to direct – only this time Martin’s other two amigos would have been Robin Williams and Bill Murray. This line-up was scuttled when Spielberg opted to make E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial instead.
