6 Movies About Home Invasions, In Honor of ‘You’re Next’

Movie #5: High-Concept Horror – The Purge

Year – 2013

The Purge is a virtual homage to home invasions. The premise is delightfully (yet perversely) simple: once a year for 12-hours nothing is illegal. Kill, rape, steal, record a game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball…all bets are off. It’s called “The Purge” and it’s how America rolls in 2022.

James (Ethan Hawke) has carved out a nice living for himself selling state-of-the-art home security systems to the elite. However, the systems are designed for the common criminal and have some flaws…as James is about to find out.

The Purge was a surprise hit for Universal. Made for just $3 million it ended up grossing over $80 million based on its novel concept and strong word of mouth. While its ending wasn’t as strong as its premise it was a fun if unsettling ride. And yes, a sequel is in the works. – TOK
