Remember that story a few days ago, about Mel Gibson making a cameo in The Hangover 2 as a Bangkok tattooist? (Read the article here.) Well, despite approval from director Todd Phillips and the studio, the cameo has been nixed.
Right now, the main perpetrator behind getting Gibson removed from the film is one of its stars, Zach Galifianakis. The comedian was on a podcast called Comedy Death Ray when he said, “But a movie you’re acting in, you don’t have a lot of control — you just show up and vomit your lines out. I’m not the boss. I’m in a deep protest right now with a movie I’m working on, up in arms about something. But I can’t get the guys to [listen] … I’m not making any leeway.”
“I thought Mel would have been great in the movie,” director Todd Phillips chimed in yesterday. “But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew.”
First of all, let me say I’m a huge fan of Galifianakis, and have been for a long time, and I’m not that big of a fan of Gibson. However, I don’t think his cameo was that big of a deal. The big cameo in the first Hangover film was Mike Tyson, who is no angel having served time in prison for rape. I guess time heals all wounds, and Gibson’s indiscretions are still very much out in the open for everyone to see.
