Although people (including myself) are way more excited about The Dark Knight Rises, there are more superhero movies on the way. As you may or may not have heard, Columbia Pictures has been in production for the making of the new Spider-man film called The Amazing Spider-man. This time it is without the “eem-over” haircut antics of Toby Maguire but the talents of up and coming actor Andrew Garfield (The Social Network). Also starring in the film is Emma Stone (Easy A) as Gwen Stacy, along with Martin Sheen (The Departed) and Sally Field (Forrest Gump) playing Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Not to mention Denis Leary as Gwen Stacy’s father!
However it doesn’t have Mary J (Yes!… Well not that we’ve heard) and according to Webb, the film seems to have a more realistic tone to it. Webb said he has written the character as a naturalistic type of character. One that tells funny jokes just through dialogue and not ATTEMPTING too hard to tell a joke (Toby Maguire). Other differences will be the little things. The semi-new suit that he will be wearing, the mechanism that he uses to sling his (Spider-man) web, now comes from the wrist instead of inside his hands and just the overall look and attitude of Webb’s Spider-man compared to Raimi’s.
“I feel we have certain obligations to the iconography of Spider-Man, which is based mostly in the comics,” Webb said. “While there are certain mainstays, a kid who gets bitten by a spider, he’s an outsider, the death of his Uncle Ben helps endow him with the mentality of a hero, those things remain the same but there’s also room for interpretation.”
I couldn’t agree more; not to mention Webb realizes that Spider-Man has been around since the 1960’s so there is a plethora of useful material to be used for the future.
As you can see in the pictures, Spider-Man isn’t a big bulky type of character; which is exactly what Webb is going for. He points out that Garfield did certainly train very hard for the film, but he didn’t want Spider-Man to be like Superman. Spidey is agile, quick and fast. Not to mention he is supposed to look like a science whiz, “nerdy” kid who just came across these powers accidentally. Webb also said that he liked the artwork behind the Ultimate Spider-Man series.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be able to offer this extraordinary new Spider-Man adventure in IMAX,” said Rory Bruer, President Worldwide Distribution, Sony Pictures Entertainment. “Marc Webb and the entire production team have been working tirelessly to deliver a 3D motion picture that will take the Spider-Man experience to a whole new level. Audiences will literally feel like they are swinging through the streets of New York and that will only be accentuated when seen in IMAX.”
“I was blown away after getting a sneak peek at some early footage for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and this latest installment in the iconic franchise is a perfect DNA match for IMAX,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “The film is an important addition to our 2012 film slate and we’re excited to be working with Marc Webb, Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and the team at Sony Pictures Entertainment to take IMAX and Spider-Man fans around the globe on this next adventure in IMAX 3D.”
