Year – 1996
Written and directed by John Sayles, Lone Star is a murder mystery that explores the racial tensions of a sleepy border town. Chris Cooper plays Sam Deeds: the local sheriff who’s following in his father’s footsteps and being dwarfed by his legacy. When Deeds discovers the remains of a 40-year old murder, it calls into question everything he (and the town) believes to be true.
The film features a sprawling cast of characters and an intricate plot which makes it feel more like reading a novel than watching a film; and I mean that as a compliment. It’s a story of mystery, intrigue, romance, and class warfare that features a jaw-dropping, gut punch of an ending. – TOK
