Movie Review: DRIVE ANGRY 3D Starring Nicholas Cage, Amber Heard

I have to be honest.  I expected this movie to be awful.  Nothing about what I had seen impressed me.  The shot of a guy throwing an ax at Cage, and it cutting his hair looked ridiculous.  Nicholas Cage and his acting looked ridiculous (which I have come to expect).  The only thing I could say about the film was that I actually enjoyed his last film MY BLOODY VALENTINE.  It certainly wasn’t great, but it was fun.  And that’s what this film was, a fun ride with some decent action.

Milton is out for revenge after his daughter is murdered and his grand daughter kidnapped.  He will stop at nothing and kill anyone who stands in his way to tracking down the satanic cult leader who has the baby.  On the way, he rescues Piper and finds a new ally to help him on his quest.  But who is Milton, and where did he come from?  And who is the “Accountant” tracking him down?

Let me start by saying the things I thought were awesome in this movie.  William Fichtner stole the film.  Every time he was on screen I couldn’t help but smile.  Mainly because he is a complete bad ass, but also because he delivers his lines so perfectly that you know he was having a blast filming this.  Also, the 3D in the film is very good.  You can definitely tell that it was filmed in 3D vs. the post-conversion process most films have been doing.  It was much easier on the eyes.

The biggest thing you have to accept with this film is that it is trying to be so bad that it is good.  Which is the main reason that Nicholas Cage is the star of the film.  And Fichtner also added a lot to that aspect.  The dialogue is campy, bad, whatever you want to call it.  The action scenes are over the top.  That is exactly what this film wants to do.  It works for about 2/3’s of the film achieving that.  But I think if you are gonna do that you need to go balls to the wall for the full length of the film.

DRIVE ANGRY is certainly not for everyone.  If you don’t like the particular genre DRIVE ANGRY is meant for then you will just think the film is awful.  It is not meant to be taken seriously.  It is meant to just be fun, action entertainment.   If you can accept the film for what it is then it is worth seeing on the big screen in 3D.  If you don’t want to shell out the extra money then wait til it hits DVD and play fun games while watching it.  It will entertain.

  • Oh man Tim. What a horrible movie. I'm surprised you found it sort of fun. I wanted it to be fun, and kept writhing in my seat thinking...ok...the broken bat to the shoulder was pretty cool, but then the next scene would come along and ruin what had started.

The film crossed campy and ended up in no man's land. Then end had me shaking my head in disbelief of what had just happened.

Was it a fine ride for a free screening. I suppose. But I would wholeheartedly never recommend it to anyone.

And P.S. Why didn't Amber Heard show some skin? That would have been the only saving grace for me.
