Box Office Mojo Weekend Numbers (June 21-23) – ‘Monsters University,’ ‘World War Z’ and ‘Man of Steel’ on Top

This summer has given us some big movies, and this past weekend is no exception. Last weekend saw the record breaking release of Warner Brothers’ highly anticipated Man of Steel, which brought in $116.6 million in three days (not to mention the $12 million Thursday night shows). Although Superman held his own, he had some fierce competition at the box office this weekend: zombies and monsters.

Disney-Pixar’s first prequel, Monsters University, brought in a whopping $82 million dollars to take first place over the weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the film ranked number 2 in all-time rated G openings, second to only Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million). The film, starring Billy Crystal and John Goodman, is already well on its way to the Monsters Inc. domestic gross of $255.8 million. The film has an aggregate score of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t bad for a sequel – but doesn’t compare to the original’s 96%.

In second place is the notoriously troubled, yet highly anticipated World War Z starring Brad Pitt. The action/horror zombie film brought in $66 million domestic, not to mention another $45.8 million foreign, to chip away at the rumored $250 million budget. The film is based on Max Brooks’ 2006 novel, which is much different than the film adaptation. However the film is receiving pretty good response from critics and audiences alike, so the changes must not have been too bad.

In third place during its second week of release is Man of Steel. The Zack Snyder directed and Christopher Nolan produced superhero reboot brought in an impressive $41.2 million to add to it’s already stellar $168.8 million, bringing the total to just over $210 million domestic.
