Book Review: “Vampire Reborn” by Emma Southee

Vampire Reborn is the first book written by Emma Southee. Southee has been writing short stories and poems for the majority of her life. This is the first novel she has published and I had the honor to read it.

Vampire Reborn focuses on the life of a woman named Tamson. She was born in the 1800’s and was excited to become a wife and mother. However, that all changes when a vampire comes into her life named Adam. Adam becomes obsessed with Tamson. He watches her and interrupts her life after she is married. He tries to convince her that she is the reincarnate of his lost love. When that doesn’t work, he turns her into a vampire. Adam strips Tamson away from her family and for years sets out to torture her and force her to kill others. Eventually, she is able to get away and lives out the next 100 years training and hiding from Adam to get up the courage and strength to kill him.

Southee has an imaginative writing style. You easily relate to Tamson and find yourself crying and screaming along with her. I have read many vampire books in my life and they start to run together. It seems the same plots have been used over and over. However, Southee puts a new twist on the vampire lore and it was very nice to read something different.

The only downside to this book is it is too short. It is only 143 pages, which is understandable from a new author. Also, there were some editing errors, but I was reading the first edition. Southee has released a second edition of Vampire Reborn, which has been completely edited.  It is the first book in the series and I cannot wait for the second book. Southee says she hopes the next book, Family Darkness, will be out July or August 2011.
