Another Take: Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis Are Not Your Average Parents in ‘We’re the Millers’

We’re the Millers is a film by director Rawson Marshall Thurber. Who the heck is that? Well let me tell you: he’s the guy that made Dodgeball, one of the funnier films of recent years. Honestly, walking in my expectations were low. Extremely low. A little under two hours later I was quite surprised with this little film.

The plot is simple, yet hilarious. A middle aged drug dealer named David ( Jason Sudeikis) is robbed for all of his drugs and money and is forced by his supplier Brad Gurdlinger (Ed Helms) to go to Mexico and smuggle a “smidge” of marijuana back into the country. Brad is walking home when he sees an R.V. with a family (that bears a striking resemblance to the Flanders Family from The Simpsons) pulled over on the side of the road asking for directions. A police officer sees this and walks up to tell them they are parked illegally, but upon seeing the innocent family gives them directions and sends them on their way. This chance incident gives Brad an idea to form a fake family to help him get through the border without arousing suspicion. The fake family he assembles is a recipe for comedy gold. Rose, a stripper (Jennifer Aniston), is my personal favorite character in this film. She’s witty, vulgar, and as always – beautiful. We even get a pole dancing seen with a shower (Awesome!!!). Casey, the fake daughter (Emma Roberts), is perfect as a new age teenage girl. And last, but not least, Kenny the fake son (Will Poulter) is the perfect example of a sheltered nervous teen, eager for acceptance. This cast is flat out hilarious and has great on-screen chemistry.

This is a comedy with plenty of smart writing,  and well developed characters – something that is missing from most recent comedies .  This film has all the makings of The Hangover so beware, don’t bring your mom or children; This one isn’t for them. If you’re a fan of  comedy I highly recommend this movie. Think National Lampoons’ Vacation meets Pineapple Express.

We’re the Millers is well worth the price of admission. I  laughed out loud more than once in this movie, and left with a smile on my face. I don’t see an Oscar in this movie’s future – but who cares? It’s exactly what it should be: hilarious.
