5 Things We Want in ‘Man of Steel’

1. Great Special Effects

This is another one that Superman Returns didn’t fully miss the mark on. In fact pieces of it were downright impressive, while other pieces felt like a major let down. The biggest disappointment was the digital Brandon Routh that landed on the wrong part of the uncanny valley.  However, Superman Returns was one of the earlier films to be filmed completely digital. It was filmed on the Panavision Genesis which is woefully outdated in the 7 years since the release of Superman Returns.  The film was even nominated for an Oscar for best visual effects, but lost in the end.  So, Superman Returns was no slouch in the looks department. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done better…

Are they going to fix it? Once again, not a lot to fix, but the art of digital filmmaking has expanded quite a bit. It’s now becoming standard to film on digital equipment, and people now expect even higher quality than they did in 2006.  Earlier trailers look great. One of the best moments of the first full trailer is the take off of Superman that looks absolutely superb. The flight of Superman looks a bit more polished, and the action looks incredibly well done.  As this film is the tentpole of WB’s summer slate, it would be a major disappointment if the film came out looking anything less than perfect. Snyder has a great knack for producing some great looking films. Despite criticism of Snyder’s stories, his films always have a visual style that is impressive.
